Vertical Gardening on a Budget
If you are short on space or just want a unique feature for your patio, a vertical pallet planter is a fantastic weekend project. And the best part? Pallets are usually free!
Preparing the Pallet
Find a clean pallet (look for the "HT" stamp, which means it was heat-treated, not chemically treated). Sand down any rough edges to prevent splinters. Paint or stain it if you desire.
Creating the Planter Pockets
Turn the pallet over. Using heavy-duty landscaping fabric and a staple gun, create "pockets" backing the spaces between the slats. Double up the fabric for extra strength.
Planting
Fill the pockets tightly with a lightweight, moisture-retaining potting mix. Plant trailing plants, herbs (like thyme, oregano, and mint), or strawberries in the slats. Lean the pallet securely against a sunny wall and water thoroughly!
