Create a Butterfly Oasis with These 4 Plants

Bring Life to Your Garden

A garden filled with butterflies is a joy to behold. To attract them and keep them around, you need to provide both nectar plants (for the adults to eat) and host plants (for the caterpillars to eat).

1. Milkweed (Asclepias)

This is non-negotiable if you want Monarch butterflies. Milkweed is the *only* plant Monarch caterpillars eat. Plant native varieties for the best results.

2. Butterfly Bush (Buddleja)

True to its name, this shrub produces long cones of tiny flowers that act as a magnet for dozens of butterfly species. (Check if it is considered invasive in your specific region; sterile varieties are available).

3. Purple Coneflower (Echinacea)

These tough, drought-tolerant native perennials provide an excellent landing pad and abundant nectar for large butterflies like Swallowtails.

4. Parsley and Dill

Do not just plant herbs for yourself! Black Swallowtail caterpillars rely on plants in the carrot family, especially parsley, dill, and fennel. Plant extra specifically for them.
